Home Child Care Provider Licensing and Training

In Ohio, any child care business that is based in household must have a license from the state in order to care for children from families that are eligible for Publicly Funded Child Care. These are called Family Child Care Providers.

The Franklin County Department of Job and Family Services (FCDJFS) has a Child Care Licensing Unit that is responsible for receiving and processing applications for anyone interested in becoming a Family Child Care Provider in Franklin County. FCDJFS reviews initial applications, submits a recommendation for licensure to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) and inspects all licensed Family Child Care Providers in Franklin County to make sure they continue to meet state licensure rules.

This licensing process requires various background checks (Children Services, BCII, FBI and more) and home inspections. Licensed Family Child Care Providers must also have a signed medical statement and complete ongoing training. Click HERE to learn more about the licensure process.

The FCDJFS Child Care Licensing Unit also provides information for parents who are interested in interviewing with a specific child care provider, whether that is a local child care center or licensed Family Child Care Provider. Before enrolling your child or children in child care, parents/caretakers should call (614) 212-1721 for a report regarding compliance, complaints and background check history for any licensed child care provider in Franklin County.
